Expressing his delight, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday congratulated former Army chief Bipin Rawat on taking charge as India's first Chief of Defence Staff (CDS). ​ PM Modi said the post reflects the hopes and aspirations of 130 crore Indians, adding that the institution of CDS carries the responsibility of modernising the Indian military. General Rawat, who demitted office on retirement as Chief of Indian Army on Tuesday received the guard of honour from all the three forces.

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chief K Sivan on Wednesday announced that India’s third lunar mission, Chandrayaan-3 is on and has been approved by the government. Addressing the media, the ISRO chief said, the land acquisition for a second space port has been initiated and the port will be in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu. "We have made good progress on Chandrayan-2, even though we could not land successfully, the orbiter is still functioning, its going to function for the next 7 years to produce science data," he said.

Jet Fuel cost up 2.6%; non-subsidised LPG price hiked by Rs 19

Jet fuel or ATF price was on Wednesday hiked by 2.6 per cent and that of non-subsidised cooking gas LPG by Rs 19 per cylinder on the back of a rise in international rates. Price of Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF), used to power aeroplanes, was raised by Rs 1,637.25 per kilolitre, or 2.6 per cent, to Rs 64,323.76 per kl in Delhi, according to a price notification of state-owned fuel retailers.

Delhi woke up to a bone-chilling morning on Tuesday after breaking the 119-year record of the coldest December day on Monday with the day temperature "unusually" sticking to the lower side. The minimum temperature recorded at 8.00 a.m. on Tuesday morning was 5 degrees Celsius. Though engulfed in fog, the visibility appeared to be better than Monday morning, with sight of Sun. The Air Quality has also improved in the national capital, however marginally, with Anand Vihar which is capital's most polluted zone, witnessing AQI of 372. Meanwhile, the IMD has predicted rain in Delhi-NCR on January 1 and January 3 night.

4 medium intensity earthquakes strike Jammu and Kashmir

Four medium intensity tremors with magnitudes ranging between 4.7 and 5.5 hit Jammu and Kashmir in a span of less than two hours on Monday night, the National Centre for Seismology said. The first quake with a magnitude of 4.7 hits at 10:42 pm, followed by one measuring 5.5 six minutes later. The two occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres.

15 new police outposts to be built in UP's Bahraich to enhance security

In a bid to strengthen the security in Uttar Pradesh's Bahraich district, which borders Nepal, 15 new police outposts will be built, an official said on Sunday. Superintendent of Police Gaurav Grover said, "The Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) looks after the security of the India-Nepal border. From Katarniaghat sanctuary to neighbouring Sharavasti district, there are five police station areas in Bahraich, which touch the India-Nepal border.  To strengthen border security in the district, stop infiltration and illegal activities, a decision was taken to build 15 new police outposts."

Indian Navy bans Facebook; use of smartphones at dockyards, on-board warships

The Indian Navy has put a ban on the use of Facebook by navy personnel. It has also banned smartphones at naval bases, dockyards and on-board warships. According to media reports, the order, issued on December 27, comes after seven naval personnel were caught leaking sensitive information to enemy intelligence agencies over social media. An operation in association with Central Intelligence Agencies and Naval Intelligence was earlier launched by the Andhra Pradesh Intelligence Department, following which an espionage racket having links with Pakistan was busted.
